Julius Eastman was a singer/songwriter/musician/dancer who understood his era and the music that surrounded it. A minimalist music composer, he did not hesitate to integrate elements inspired by disco or funk music that characterized half of the 70s. Sadly, in 1981, he was evicted from his apartment. Some of his manuscripts were destroyed, and he died in the utmost anonymity.

Ensemble 0 and a part of AUM Grand Ensemble teamed up to revive one of Eastman’s works named Feminine. Captivating and hypnotic, the piece is like a long breath shaped by four elements: a repetitive motif, six notes, bells that are out of sync and a precise timing. Eastman hoped for music to remain an oral tradition, believing that recreating the artform is a violation of its profound essence. But the alternative would have been silence, then oblivion.
