La naissance de la tragédie (The Birth of Tragedy) extracts theatre from its spectacular form embellished with ornaments and glimmering special effects. The play does so with grace and clarity that can only stem from a situation stripped down to its bare essentials: an actor on stage, with nothing else to act from but his memory. What he remembers incorporates the tale of The Persians by Aeschylus with the phantasmagorical visions of its first performance in 472 B.C. In attempting to pinpoint the time when tragedy began and started its rise to splendor, the piece becomes a homage to the historical vestiges eternally seeking that which is poignant.
